The Serra de Jaraguá, protected as a state park, dominates the town's landscape.

Serra de Jaraguá

The town's postcard is the Serra de Jaraguá State Park (Parque Estadual da Serra de Jaraguá). Entry is free, and the dirt road that starts behind the Rosário Church can be driven all the way to the free-flight ramp, about 5 km. At the top there are viewpoints, the Poção Trail, the Abismo Trail, a stretch of the Cora Coralina Trail and an archaeological site. Everything about the visit on the Serra de Jaraguá page.

Paragliding

The ramp on the mountain is one of the best-known free-flight launch sites in Brazil's Center-West, with the best conditions between June and October. See paragliding on the Serra de Jaraguá.

Rivers and waterfalls

In the rainy season (October to April) the rivers rise quickly; avoid swimming at waterfalls after heavy rain.

Historic center

The Rosário Church (1776), the Nossa Senhora da Penha Mother Church, the Conceição Church (begun in 1828) and the house of Father Silvestre, today the House of Culture, tell the story of the old gold-mining settlement. Cavalhadas and festivals

During the Festa do Divino (Feast of the Holy Spirit), whose date changes every year, the town holds the Cavalhadas, in which horsemen re-enact the battle between Christians and Moors. Street Carnival and the Festa do Peão (rodeo), in the week of the town's anniversary (July 29), complete the festival calendar.

Shopping

Many people come to Jaraguá to buy clothes and jeans straight from the factories. See the town's clothing factories, how to buy wholesale and the current situation of the Outlet Jaraguá.

Sports and adventure

Besides free flight, the mountain has a downhill mountain-bike course and hiking trails. During Carnival, the traditional Ralyboia (a tube race) goes down the Rio das Almas.

Frequently asked questions

No. The Serra de Jaraguá State Park does not charge an entrance fee for independent visits. Large groups and technical visits must book with the park administration. See the Serra page.

Can I do a tandem paragliding flight?

It depends on the availability of instructors and on the wind. At the last check, the portal did not find a regular tandem-flight operator; look for accredited schools and book in advance. See paragliding.

What is the best time to visit?

From May to September the weather is dry and the rivers are cleaner; for free flight, the best months are June to October. The Cavalhadas change date every year. See when to go.
