Geography of Jaraguá, Goiás

Jaraguá lies in the center of the state of Goiás, in the region known as the Vale do São Patrício. The town center sits at an elevation of 610 meters, between the Rio das Almas and the Serra de Jaraguá.

Relief

The territory is 55% flat, 35% rolling and 10% mountainous. The highest point is the Serra de Jaraguá, between the Rio das Almas and the Pari River, protected as the Serra de Jaraguá State Park. At the top of the mountain are the television towers and the paragliding ramp.

Under the Köppen classification the climate is tropical savanna (Aw), typically hot, with two well-defined periods: rains from September/October to April and a dry winter from May to September. The values below are approximate averages, for reference.

Rivers

The most important river is the Rio das Almas, which rises in the Serra dos Pireneus, in Pirenópolis, and has several tributaries, such as the Lajes and the Engenho. Other important rivers are the Pari, the Saraiva, the Sucuri and the Rio do Peixe. Sand for the construction industry is extracted from the Rio das Almas and the Pari River.

Vegetation

The vegetation is a mix of cerrado (Brazilian savanna) and tropical forest, dominated by small, twisted trees with thick, wrinkled bark and large, brittle leaves. Between August and September the yellow and purple ipê trees bloom at the foot of the mountain, one of the most photographed sights in town.

Economy

Farming, especially corn, beans and pineapple (Jaraguá was once called the "king of pineapples"), beef and dairy cattle, timber and clay extraction for ceramics, quarries and a strong clothing industry, which has become the municipality's economic trademark. See the clothing factories of Jaraguá.
